Apple released the iOS 17.2.1 software update last month, initially stating it aimed to deliver "important bug fixes." However, the Cupertino-based tech giant later clarified that the update specifically "addresses an issue that can cause the battery to drain faster under certain conditions," in China and Japan. Now, a recent report suggests that the iOS 17.2.1 update has unintentionally introduced connectivity problems for some iPhone users.

According to BGR, users have taken to Apple's Support Community Discussions platform to report issues with their iPhones no longer connecting to their cellular providers after updating to iOS 17.2.1. One frustrated user shared, "After updating my iPhone last night to 17.2.1, I can no longer connect to my network provider. Tried the resets and still it does not work! Very frustrating. Trusted Apple and iPhone for years, now not so sure."

Another user mentioned facing heating and battery draining problems on their iPhone 15 after installing the update, suggesting potential thermal issues leading to overheating in some iPhone 15 series handsets.

Workarounds to address the reported issues have been discussed on the Apple Support Community Discussions website:

  • Reset Network Settings: Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Factory Reset: Backup the iPhone and perform a factory reset by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
  • Delete all VPN profiles: Visit Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN, tap the "i" in VPN profiles, and delete VPN profiles.

The report also suggests users consider installing the iOS 17.3 beta version, released before iOS 17.2.1, as it may potentially address the connectivity bug. Users interested in the iOS 17.3 public beta can sign up on beta.apple.com, follow the instructions for enrollment, and access the update via Settings > General > Software Update.

However, users are reminded that beta releases are unstable, and participation in the beta program will be required until the stable version of iOS 17.3 is officially released.
